Tutorial 4: Scale-aware chord / arp
Goal: Generate MIDI notes in your Set’s scale — as a chord block or arpeggio — into the clip you right-click.
Prerequisites: Getting Started; Live Set with scale enabled (Live 12 scale tools).
Time: ~20 minutes
You will use: Template Scale-aware chord/arp generator (featured)
Steps
- In Live, set your desired scale for the Set (root note + scale type).
- In Patchwright, load Scale-Aware Chord/Arp from Templates or onboarding.
- Set Extension name (e.g.
Scale Chord Arp). - Review highlighted editable params on the canvas (if shown after template load):
- Mode — chord vs arp behavior
- Start beat, arp step, note length, velocity
- Build & Run → connect to Live.
- Create or select an empty MIDI clip, right-click → Extensions → your command.
- Open the piano roll — new notes should match the Set scale.
Expected results
| Where | What you see |
|---|---|
| Patchwright | Graph reads Song scale (root + intervals), builds notes, writes to clip |
| Live | MIDI notes appear in the clip; pitches follow the Set scale |
| Changing scale in Live | Re-run the command after changing scale to regenerate |
If something goes wrong
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Wrong pitches | Confirm scale is set in Live; graph reads Song root and intervals |
| Empty clip | Use MIDI clip trigger; clip can be empty before run |
| No command | Rebuild; check Developer Mode and Extensions enabled |
| Notes out of range | Adjust template params or start beat |
